Sometimes you need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Maybe you want to move away from big city living or perhaps you simply want to see what interesting small towns are out there and learn more about their fascinating histories, dine at hole-in-the-wall restaurants, take a leisurely stroll to see the natural splendor or have some fun at unique attractions. Fortunately, there are plenty such hidden gems found around the country that are worth visiting on a day trip or weekend getaway.

HGTV searched around the country for "charming" hamlets and villages to compile a list of the "best kept secret" of the best small town in every state. According to the site, the top choice for North Carolina is the "scenic" locale of Ocracoke Island.

Here's what HGTV had to say about this quaint spot:

"Residents of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, like to say their town is the 'cure for the common beach.' The beach is accessible by ferry and sits beside Silver Lake, a scenic harbor. It's popular for its shops and restaurants, historic British cemetery, and its light station, the oldest still operating in the state. Like a good scare? Take a ghost walk with a descendant of Blackbeard's quartermaster, or catch a short boat ride to Portsmouth Island's so-called ghost village."
