Shooting Victim's Mother Urges Commission To Consider Sanctuary Status

(Haywood County, NC) -- The mother of UNC-Charlotte shooting victim Riley Howell is urging Haywood County to consider its decision on potentially becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary. WLOS-TV is reporting a crowd of people spoke in support of a resolution in favor of declaring sanctuary status last night. Natalie Henry-Howell told commissioners she wants them to give it careful thought before passing it. She also requested they consider tighter restrictions. The board made no decision after around three hours.

Judge Says Students Are Getting Left Behind

(Raleigh, NC) -- State lawmakers are being ordered to come up with a plan to ensure students are receiving sound, basic education. Superior Court Judge David Lee said Tuesday that too many kids in North Carolina's public education system are getting left behind. He signed an order requiring legislators to address seven elements from a report developed by an independent consultant that was released last month. The consultant has suggested the state spend eight-billion more dollars over eight years for education.

Two Suspects Arrested For Attempted Murder

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Two men are being charged with attempted murder in Hendersonville. One person was injured in a shooting outside Norm's Mini Mart on Dana Road Saturday afternoon. The suspects were arrested yesterday and taken to the Henderson County Detention Center The victim has since been released from the hospital.

Waynesville Police Investigate Murder-Suicide

(Waynesville, NC) -- Waynesville Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide. Officers found two people dead outside a home on Long Street Tuesday morning. Waynesville's interim police chief told WLOS-TV that a knife was used. Investigators aren't looking for any suspects.

Jury Selection To Start In Murder Trial

(Asheville, NC) -- Jury selection is expected today in a Buncombe County murder trial. Brenda McCutcheon is accused in the 2016 shooting of Asheville plastic surgeon Dr. Buddy McCutcheon. He was found dead in their Arden home. WLOS-TV says investigators found a gun in ivy outside the residence

Asheville Man Guilty In Investment Scheme

(Charlotte, NC) -- An Asheville man is guilty of stealing millions in an investment scheme. Hal Brown, Junior admitted in federal court yesterday that he collected around 22-million-dollars between 2006 and 2019 from customers. He reportedly convinced them to invest in intellectual property that he owned, most of which were movies he claimed he was selling to large media companies. Much of the money was used on Brown's personal purchases.

Cabarrus County Passes Resolution To Support Second Amendment

(Cabarrus County, NC) -- Cabarrus County is showing its support of the Second Amendment. The board of commissioners passed a Second Amendment resolution last night, but did not include the term "sanctuary" in the measure. Sheriff Van Shaw said he didn't want the county to be considered a sanctuary because it can be misunderstood as a reference to immigration. Both Lincoln and Rowan counties have passed similar resolutions to protect rights of gun owners.

Anson County High Schooler Shot To Death

(Wadesboro, NC) -- Investigators are looking for a suspect who killed an Anson County high school student. WSOC-TV reports 16-year old Malik Byrd was shot to death after a pickup basketball game in Wadesboro on Monday. Byrd played football at Anson High School. A 15-year-old Monroe High School student from Union County was injured. Wadesboro's police chief says the shooting stemmed from a fight on the court.

Mother Accused Of Child's Death Appears In Court

(Gaston County, NC) -- A Gaston County mother accused in her daughter's death says she would never hurt her child. Emoni Burnett was in court yesterday, following her arrest last week for involuntary manslaughter. Her 14-month-old daughter died in August due to what investigators said were heat-related causes. The child was found in a closet of a home on New Hope Road in Gastonia. The judge gave her a 50-thousand-dollar bond.

York County Man Facing Animal Cruelty Charges After Attack

(York County, NC) -- A York County man is facing a range of animal cruelty charges in connection to a pit bull attack. A 71-year-old woman was injured while watching the man's dogs at a home close to Hickory Grove last weekend. Investigators say eleven dogs were found chained to a pole. Ronald Faulkenberry was cited for nearly 60 local and state violations ranging from ill-treatment of animals and animal fighting to inadequate water.

Delivery Driver Shoots Armed Robbery Suspects

(Charlotte, NC) -- Four suspects are accused of trying to rob a pizza delivery driver in east Charlotte. The CMPD says the driver pulled out his own gun in retaliation when the group ambushed him at the Hillrock Estates Apartments near Eastway Drive late Monday night. Three of the four suspects were injured in the shooting.

NoDa Sandwich Shop Named Best Classic Restaurant

(Charlotte, NC) -- A NoDa sandwich shop is on a list of some of the best classic restaurants in the country. Food and Wine magazine compiled a tally for each state this month, and Brooks' Sandwich House was one of five in North Carolina. The restaurant was noted for its chili, burgers and livermush sandwiches. The shop's co-owner, Scott Brooks, was shot to death outside the restaurant in early December.

Judge Orders State To Do More To Ensure Sound Basic Education

(Raleigh, NC) -- A Superior Court judge says the state isn't doing enough to make sure students are getting a sound, basic education and he ordered North Carolina leaders to make changes soon. Raleigh Superior Court Judge David Lee on Tuesday signed an order agreeing with an independent consultant who recommended an eight-billion-dollar increase in education funding over the next eight years. In his order, Lee wrote, "North Carolina's PreK-12 public education system leaves too many students behind -- especially students of color and economically disadvantaged students."

Durham Plans 3 New Schools

(Durham County, NC) -- Durham Public Schools plans three new schools to ease overcrowding. The district said Tuesday it plans to open two new elementary schools in South Durham and a rebuilt North High School. The new 50-million dollar high school will go up five minutes south of the old building on North Foxboro Road. Construction on the first of the schools is planned in the next few months, and all three schools are expected to open by 2023.

Eli Lilly & Co. To Add 462 Jobs, Invest $474-Million In Durham

(Durham, NC) -- Pharmaceutic powerhouse Eli Lilly & Company plans to add more than 460 new jobs and invest more than 470-million dollars in Research Triangle Park. Lilly will make the nearly half-billion dollar investment over the next five years and expand its workforce over the next seven. The company says the jobs in manufacturing, assembly, and packaging will pay an average minimum wage of close to 72-thousand dollars a year. Lilly is investing and expanding in exchange for 12-point-four-million dollars in local and state incentives

The National Weather Service is forecasting a low of 26 this morning, with wind that will make it feel even colder. This afternoon's high will be only in the mid-40s, followed by another near-freezing start to the day on Thursday. Friday will bring highs in the mid-50s, lows in the mid-40s and rain.

Duke Pounds Miami, 89-59 To End Losing Streak

(Durham, NC) -- Duke's losing streak is over after the Blue Devils pounded Miami, 89-59 at Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday night. Duke lost at Clemson and at home against Louisville last week but had no trouble with Miami. Freshman forward Matthew Hurt led the Blue Devils with a game-high 22, including 15 in the first half. Tre Jones had 16 points and six assists and center Vernon Carey added 11 points. The Blue Devils shot 53-percent from the field to run their record to 6-2 in and ACC and 16-3 overall.

Randolph Co. Math Teacher Accused Of Rape

(Randolph Co., NC) -- A Randolph County math teacher is under arrest on suspicion of rape. Twenty-four-year-old Brian Guerrero was taken into custody yesterday on a charge of second-degree forcible rape. It reportedly involved another adult and not a student. The school district says Guerrero taught at Randolph Early College High School until his resignation Monday.

Master Plan To Tackle Gun Violence Revealed

(Forsyth Co., NC) -- Forsyth County is announcing its plan to tackle gun violence. The sheriff's office, the U.S. District Attorney Drug Task Force and Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines held a news conference yesterday. They said in 2019 alone, the city of Winston-Salem had 31 homicides. Their 2020 master plan includes embracing new technology, strengthening communication between agencies, targeting gangs and educating students.

Wilkes Co. Pastor Arrested On Multiple Felony Sex Offenses

(Wilkes Co., NC) -- A Wilkes County pastor is facing 115 counts of felony sex charges. Rodney Luffman of Pleasant Ridge Road was arrested last week. Sheriff's officials say the sex offenses spanned 15 years and involved a victim as young as four-years old. Luffman is in the Wilkes County Jail on one-million-dollars bail.

Teenager Killed In Greensboro Shooting

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are investigating the shooting death of an 18-year-old boy. Brannon Tyson was found shot Monday afternoon in the 47-hundred-block of Fewell Road. He died of his injuries. Police have not released any information about a possible suspect or motive in the case.
