Suspect Charged In West Asheville Murder

(Asheville, NC) -- A suspect is in jail for a murder in west Asheville. Investigators say 25-year-old Deveron Roberts is accused of shooting Antwan Eddings to death at a home on Fayetteville Street Monday morning. He's been connected to another shooting the night before on Fayetteville Street. That victim remains at the hospital and was last listed in serious condition.

Mission Health Steps Up Visitor Restrictions

(Asheville, NC) -- An increase in flu cases is causing Mission Health to put visitor restrictions in place. Only partners and immediate family over the age of 12 will be allowed in patient care areas at all member hospitals in western North Carolina. There have been 21 flu-related deaths across the state this season, including one child from the mountain region. The CDC says more than 30 states are experiencing high levels of flu activity.

Speed Limit Dropped On Nearly 20 Streets

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville drivers may need to pay extra attention to speed limit signs. WLOS-TV is reporting the city council approved a speed limit drop on 19 streets at its meeting Tuesday. The city conducted traffic engineering studies after concerned residents requested lower speed limits.

Allegiant Adds Four Destinations Out Of Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- The presence of Allegiant is continuing to grow at Asheville Regional Airport. The airline announced Tuesday that it will soon begin offering new routes to Boston, Chicago, Houston and Austin, Texas. The nonstop one-way routes are being offered at prices as low as 33-dollars for a limited time. Flights will start going out to these cities in May.

Pedestrian Struck Killed On U.S. 25

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating a deadly pedestrian wreck. Officers say a 68-year-old man was killed early Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car on U.S. 25 near the Blue Ridge Parkway. The driver stayed at the scene and isn't expected to face charges. Investigators believe the man walked out into the road before he was hit.

World War Two Nurse Donates Largest-Ever Gift To Community College

(Henderson County, NC) -- Blue Ridge Community College has big plans thanks its largest-ever donation from a World War Two nurse. School officials said Tuesday that Liselotte Wehrheim [[ LEE-zay-lot-tay Vehr-hyme ]] gifted one-point-seven-five-million-dollars to its education foundation. The college's president says the money will help provide scholarships and grow more support for the Flat Rock school's health care programs. Wehrheim died last year at the age of 103.

Keuchly Retiring After Eight Seasons With Panthers

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Carolina Panthers' linebacker is hanging up his cleats. Luke Keuchly [[ kee-klee ]] announced his retirement Tuesday after wrapping up eight impressive seasons in the NFL. The 28-year-old was selected to seven Pro Bowls and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Keuchly said in a Twitter video that it was the right chance to move on. Panthers' owner David Tepper called him a once-in-a-generation player.

Artist Memorializes Slain Sandwich Shop Owner

(Charlotte, NC) -- A NoDa artist is helping pay tribute to a sandwich shop owner who was shot to death last month. A man known as Stencilspray on Instagram told WBTV that he wanted to memorialize Scott Brooks, so he immediately designed an art piece of his image. The spray-painted stencil painting is now up at various businesses and on fences in the community. The artist says Brooks Sandwich House has requested he paint the image on the back of the restaurant. Scott was killed while opening the business, and the suspects still haven't been found.

Former County Employee Sues Over Firing

(Charlotte, NC) -- A former employee in the medical examiner's office is suing Mecklenburg County. Eric Wheeler told WSOC-TV he was fired after a co-worker complained about pictures from work that he posted on social media. He says he never posted anything that identified anyone. The lawsuit claims Wheelers' civil rights were violated and he was wrongfully fired. He wants damages and his job back.

CMS To Change Language In Sex Ed

(Charlotte, NC) -- Sex ed is changing in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. A measure approved by the school board last night alters some of the language used in sex education classes. WBTV reports a Myers Park High School senior first brought attention to the matter, saying that some of the wording was too dated for this generation. The dangers of sex trafficking are also expected to be discussed in future classes.

Man Stabbed At Uptown Transit Center

(Charlotte, NC) -- One man is recovering from injuries in an uptown stabbing. The CMPD says the 22-year-old was wounded in a fight at the transit center on East Trade Street Monday afternoon. No suspects have been arrested. NBC Charlotte says there were multiple shootings at the transit center last year.

Report: Panthers Hire Offensive Coordinator

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers appear to be gaining a rising star as offensive coordinator. ESPN is reporting 30-year-old Joe Brady has agreed to the position after serving as passing game coordinator for LSU for one season. Tigers' quarterback Joe Burrow passed for over 56-hundred yards and 60 touchdowns under Brady's revamped passing scheme, which helped LSU win the national championship on Monday night. Brady previously served as an offensive assistant for the New Orleans Saints.

State Senate Fails To Override Cooper Veto Of Teacher Pay Bill

(Raleigh, NC) -- The state Senate failed to override Governor Roy Cooper's veto of a bill to raise teachers' pay. Tuesday's 28-21 vote was short of the super-majority needed to override a governor's veto. Cooper has criticized the Republican-backed compensation bill as being "paltry." He says teachers and school staff deserve higher raises.

(Durham, NC) -- The One Voice Acting Troupe at Durham's Hillside High School is canceling its spring break trip to Dubai because of rising tensions in the Middle East. Theatre Director Wendell Tabb says Hillside High's faculty decided to cancel the trip over concerns about the students' safety. Students say they understand the decision, with one telling reporters, "You can't replace a life, but you can replace a trip." The One Voice Acting Troupe will instead travel to St. Lucia in the West Indies during spring break.

Woman, Child Injured In Crash When Man Drives Away From Police

(Wake County, NC) -- A woman and her child are recovering from minor injuries after a man driving them crashed his car trying to run from Wake County Sheriff's deputies. Deputies arrested the 20-year-old man around 3 p.m. Tuesday after he took off when a deputy tried to pull him over near Highway 264 and Wendell Falls Parkway in eastern Wake County. After driving off, he crashed into another car, and jumped out but deputies caught him. He's in the Wake County Jail, facing a number of charges.

Number 3 Duke Falls To Clemson, 79-72, In Stunning Upset

(Clemson, SC) -- Duke was on the wrong side of an upset as Clemson took down the third-ranked Blue Devils, 79-72 in Clemson Tuesday night. The Tigers took a seven-point lead into half-time and made it stand up after intermission. Freshman center Vernon Carey Jr. led the Blue Devils with 20 points as they fall to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. Duke hosts Number 11 Louisville Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Hit By SUV In Thomasville

(Thomasville, NC) -- A Davidson County sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was hit by an SUV. It happened around 7:30 yesterday morning when deputies responded to a building on Kanoy Road about a disturbance. Officials say a large SUV blasted through a closed garage door and struck the deputy. He was rushed to the hospital in serious but stable condition. The driver of the SUV was also hurt. An investigation is ongoing.

Davidson Co. Approves Sanctuary Status

(Davidson Co., NC) -- Davidson County is declaring itself a Second Amendment sanctuary. Commissioners last night voted in favor of adopting a Second Amendment sanctuary resolution to protect their right to bear arms. Similar resolutions were recently adopted in Surry and Wilkes counties as well.

Greensboro PD Names New Chief

(Greensboro, NC) -- The Greensboro Police Department is naming a new chief of police. Deputy chief Brian James will be sworn in on January 31st. He's been with the department for over 23 years. James says he will hold community forums and gather public input after being sworn in later this month.
