(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper says North Carolina is facing the likelihood of severe storm damage from Hurricane Dorian later this week. Swift water and search and rescue teams are ready to respond if needed, and 300 members of the national guard were activated yesterday. Governor Cooper said he is asking President Trump for a federal declaration of emergency. Some areas in the eastern part of the state could see a foot of rain.

Suspect Charged With Murder In Hit-And-Run

(Black Mountain, NC) -- An Asheville woman is facing second-degree murder charges in a hit-and-run. WLOS-TV is reporting Heather Johnson admitted to police that she hit a man in the parking lot of the Super Eight motel in Black Mountain in early August. The victim died a few days later at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Johnson was charged and arrested for murder on Sunday.

APD Investigates Apartment Homicide

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating a homicide at an apartment complex. A man died after being shot in the upper leg at the Hillcrest Apartments on Atkinson Street early Sunday morning. He wasn't a resident of Hillcrest. No arrests have been announced. An investigator told the Citizen-Times that it was the city's sixth homicide this year.

Red Cross Seeking Blood Donations

(Asheville, NC) -- Donors have a chance to give blood across Western North Carolina this week. The local Red Cross chapter's executive director told WLOS-TV the time to help is now after some blood drives were canceled in South Carolina. The Red Cross was already dealing with a shortage. Fourteen drives across nine counties are scheduled this week, with some coming up today at the Spindale House in Rutherford County, Autumn Care in Marion, Macon County Library and Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church in Murphy.

Some Asheville Flights Affected By Hurricane

(Asheville, NC) -- Travelers looking to fly out of Asheville Regional Airport are being urged to keep a close eye on your flight status over the next few days. Delta and Allegiant Airlines say a combined 20-plus airports could be affected by Hurricane Dorian. Half-a-dozen flights were canceled out of Asheville yesterday due to the storm. Airport officials say the best thing to do is check online before you head out.

Asheville Woman Heads To Fiji For Eco-Challenge

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville woman is heading to Fiji to compete in a 12-day, 300-mile race. The Citizen-Times says Michele Hobson is part of a team of four that will be paddling, hiking, biking and sailing for a chance to win 100-thousand-dollars in an event called Eco-Challenge. Crews will begin filming the 66 participating teams on Friday, with the production streaming on Amazon Prime Video next year.

State Board Watching Ahead Of Congressional Election

(Charlotte, NC) -- Hurricane Dorian could have an affect on the ninth district congressional election. While the storm isn't expected to have much of an effect on Charlotte, it's unclear what impact it may have on the eastern edge of the district in places like Elizabethtown or Fayetteville. The state elections board is encouraging people to vote early this week if possible. Election day is one week from today, and it can be rescheduled if the elections board decides to do so.

Two High School Students Die In Lancaster Wreck

(Lancaster, SC) -- South Carolina troopers are investigating a wreck that killed two high school students and injured two others in Lancaster. They were all riding in a car that ran off Highway 521 and slammed into a tree on Sunday morning. Rock Hill Schools officials say the victims attended South Pointe High School. The two that were injured are at CMC Main in critical condition.

Arson Suspected In Charlotte Home Fire

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte Fire Department is investigating a suspected arson. Flames engulfed a home on Yadkin Avenue near Villa Heights early Monday morning. Two adults inside the home at the time were able to escape safely. The fire damage was estimated to be just under 100-thousand-dollars. Investigators believe someone intentionally set the blaze.

CMPD Looking For Hit-And-Run Suspect

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for a hit-and-run suspect. Officers say a pedestrian was hit by a car on Wilkinson Boulevard last night. WSOC-TV is reporting the victim suffered life-threatening injuries. No description of the vehicle was given, but police said the driver fled near Weyland Avenue.

Speedway Opens Campground For Evacuees

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-area businesses and organizations are doing their part in helping evacuees from the hurricane. The Rock City Campground at Charlotte Motor Speedway is open free of charge for evacuees. More than 30 sites have been reserved so far. The Humane Society of Charlotte is helping care for nine dogs that were brought in from North Myrtle Beach. Piedmont Animal Rescue in Mooresville is also taking in evacuated pets from multiple states.

A number of grocers reported Monday they're having a hard time keeping up with demand for milk, bread, eggs, and bottled water. Authorities say it's a good idea to stock up before Dorian begins marching up the Carolina coast.

Election Officials Encourage Early Voting Before Storm Hits

(Raleigh, NC) -- State election officials are encouraging voters to cast ballots during the early voting period ahead of next Tuesday's elections. Early voting locations will open today and are scheduled to stay open through Friday but election officials say the earlier you vote, the better. The state's emergency management director says North Carolina could begin feeling the effects of Hurricane Dorian as soon as Wednesday night. That's likely to mean heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding, even if Dorian weakens as it closes in on the state.

Cumberland County Preps For Storm

(Cumberland County, NC) -- Cumberland County is moving to be prepared before Hurricane Dorian hits. The county partially activated its Emergency Operation Center on Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service says Dorian will bring tropical storm winds and four to six inches of rain, beginning Wednesday night. Methodist University has canceled classes for the week.

Duke Energy Progress Putting In New Safeguards To Protect Power Infrastructure

(Raleigh, NC) -- Duke Energy Progress is working to keep the lights on when Hurricane Dorian rolls in. The power company has been putting up flood barriers around substations in flood-prone areas to try and protect them from rising water. Duke Energy officials say they learn from past storms like Hurricane Florence that knocked out power to more than two-million homes, schools, and businesses last September.

Dare Co. Issues Mandatory Evacuations

(Dare County, NC) -- Dare County is issuing mandatory evacuations ahead of Hurricane Dorian. The order goes into effect at 6 a.m. tomorrow. County officials are also issuing a state of emergency, which includes restrictions on swimming in the ocean. Dare County schools will also be closed from Wednesday through Friday.

Two People Shot, Two Injured In Greensboro Home Invasion

(Greensboro, NC) -- Two people are dead and two others are injured after a home invasion in Greensboro. It happened yesterday morning at an apartment on West Market Street. Officers say Christopher Parson and Kendrick Gilbert were killed, and a woman and infant were hurt. They're investigating the case as a double-homicide. No suspect information has been released.

Triad Salvation Army Deployed To Charleston

(Charleston, SC) -- The Salvation Army is sending workers from the Triad to South Carolina in preparation for Hurricane Dorian. Workers from Winston-Salem and Greensboro deployed to Charleston yesterday afternoon. They'll set up feeding and hydration services for first responders.

Man Killed In Winston-Salem ID'd

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem police are identifying a man who was found dead outside an apartment complex. The body of Luis Torres, who's from Mexico, was found yesterday morning at Jon Arch apartments on Brookline Street. The police department is working with the Mexican Consulate to find and notify the victim's family. Officers believe he was violently attacked. An investigation is ongoing.
