Asheville Reassigns Assistant City Manager (Asheville, NC)
The city of Asheville is making internal changes in the wake of the leaked bodycam footage of an officer beating an accused jaywalker. Interim assistant city manager Jade Dundas will now go back to serving as capitol projects director for the city. Dundas had learned of the video footage but never reported it to city manager Gary Jackson. The city also says departments such as police and fire must now report directly to the city manager.
Bus Catches Fire At School (Asheville, NC)
Investigators say a fire that broke out at Vance Elementary School in Asheville early Sunday may have been set on purpose. Engines rushed out to find one bus on fire and damage to two others. The school system says all buses were being checked on every school campus following the incident. The building was never on fire, but some did spread to an awning next to the bus that sustained the most damage.
Deputy Shoots Man In Domestic Violence Call (Yancey County, NC)
The Yancey County Sheriff's Office says a deputy shot and killed a man during a domestic violence call Friday night. A woman called 911 from a home in Burnsville and told emergency responders that her husband broke in with an ax. The shooting happened after deputies arrived at the scene. No names have been released at this time. The state bureau of investigation is now heading up the case.
Bond Hearing Today For Woman Charged With DWI (Haywood County, NC)
A woman charged with DWI in an accident that left her and another woman with brain injuries is expected to appear in Buncombe County court for a bond hearing today. Karen Wheeler was charged in the 2011 accident on New Leicester Highway, but the case has stalled in court due to competency questions. She was recently charged in another case involving possession of methamphetamines and morphine in Waynesville. There has been a motion filed to revoke her bond.
Escaped Inmate Turns Himself In (Gaston County, NC)
An escaped Gaston County inmate is back in jail. Thomas Walker escaped from the Gaston Correctional Center on Thursday night and was on the run for just a short time. He turned himself back in on Friday night around 9:30. The 41-year-old has been serving time since 2014 for larceny charges. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says new charges will now be added.
Rutherford County Citizens Discuss School Safety (Rutherford County, NC)
Citizens of Rutherford County are looking for reassurance that the community and its schools are safe. School and Sheriff's Department representatives were part of a panel during Saturday's public forum in Bostic. It was moderated by Kimberly King of WLOS-Asheville. Topics ranged from gun reform to mental health changes. School board member Brandon Gosey says he feels the system has been proactive with safety plans.
